NEW MAIL ART CALL 2009

Dear Friends,

We invited artists all over the world to contribute their work in this exhibition called the 1st Mail Art Festival in Malaysia / MMAF

You can send 2 to 10 artworks, on paper or canvas, sized A4 (21 x 30 cm) or A3 (31 x 42 cm). There is no participation fee. ORIGINAL art works only. NO photocopy or computer prints. Every artwork of those sizes will receive a certificate of appreciation from MMAF to acknowledge your mail art is in our permanent collection.

Please label your artwork/s as a GIFT or SOUVENIR – NO COMMERCOAL VALUE –. If you put the value for the artwork/s, 'Malaysian Custom' will be tax for very high price. We cannot afford for that.

Every participation, please include:-

Each artwork will be exhibited at the Shah Alam Gallery, Yayasan Seni Selangor (Selangor Art Foundation). Documentation will be launched online at :-

Mailart call "Our Police / Prevent Crime."  
Once a year in the district of Wedding, in Berlin, Germany, artists organize and hold a mailart (art associated with postage stamps, envelopes, postcards, etc.) exhibition. The Wedding district is one of the poorest in Berlin. High unemployment and poor average family incomes often make life difficult for our neighbors in Wedding.  However, Wedding's citizens have begun grassroots initiatives to build a safer, more caring community.

Crime Prevention is one of our main goals, and building a good relationship between the residents of Wedding and our local police is another major goal. We want to show Wedding's policemen and policewomen that we care about them, and that we appreciate their work.  That is the reason we have organized this year's mailart exhibition.  Children will draw pictures, and artists from around the world will create and send their works.  We would be very pleased if artists from around the world would show their solidarity with the people and police officers of Wedding. Here is our request:

Please send us your piece of mailart or anything else related to your station's police work.
All entries will be on public display at Osterkirche (the Easter Church) Samostrasse 4, 13353 Berlin, Germany for three months starting on Saturday October 28, 2006.
Deadline for entries: Sunday September 30, 2006.
Documentation (in black and white) of the exhibit will be sent to every police agency/participant which participates, with the theme: "Our Police / Prevent Crime."
All received items will be given to "Polizeihistorische Sammlung Berlin" (Police Museum) after the exhibition has ended.

Besides Anne Braunschweig and other artists from around the world, the Estonian Chief of police sent an entry, the police of Malta as well as Police headquarters from Stockholm and Brussels and others.

One other nice aspect: I’ll be able to issue a printed documentation of all entries afterwards. So every participant will get nice documentation.

SINCE starting work on Mail Art Projects, I have met friends and artists from all over the world. Mail Art Artists have produced very special and unique art pieces. In April 2006 (8 April - 8 May 2006) , I had my 12th Solo Exhibition at one of the well known art galleries in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. 50 pieces of paintings on canvas from the 'Foundation Series' were exhibited at the exhibition. "INVITED MAIL ARTISTS EXHIBITION was in conjuction of Suzlee's 12th Solo Art Exhibition, and the exhibition was VERY SUCCESSFULL.

With your pens... create, stamp and post! 
1: With the occasion of the Reading festival and its 1st birthday (13, October 14, and 15 2006), the Correspondances media library of Divonne-the-Baths is organizing various events centered around correspondence. Within this framework, a mail art call entitled "With your pens... create, stamp and post! " is open to all mail artists.
2: "Mail art is simple... like a letter sent through the post office. Start with an envelope (or make an envelope).  Preferably, cover it with colors and materials of your choice: ink, gouache, watercolor, felts or pencils... Illustrate merrily according to all that you can imagine: life, love, friendship, poetry, humor... After that, relax a few moments. While waiting, create stamps... lick your stamps and adhere to the envelope. Then, mix the whole with much imagination. Do not forget to affix the addresses. When complete, slip your mailart into the first letter-box you find. The quote "to post, it is to create!"! is extracted from" Mall art: postal art, posted art "of Renaud Siegmann, Alternatives, 2002.
3: Your mail art can be flat or in relief, but not exceeding the A4 format (21 cm X 29,7 cm) and on 2 cm maximum thickness. No dangerous or illicit objects.
4: Creations of mail art must arrive before September 21, 2006. Please insure that addresses are readable. In each envelope, include artist info including: full name, date of birth and return address (and e-mail if available).
5: The participants in the call will be grouped into three age categories: children to 11 years, teenagers from 12 to 15 years and adults from 16 years.
6: Two prizes will be given for each category of ages: a juried prize and a public favorite. The prizes will be awarded to the winners on Saturday October 14, 2006 with the Correspondances media library in the neighborhoods of 17h (except counter-order).
7: The works received within the theme of the contest "With your pens... create, stamp and post!" will be exhibited at the Correspondances media library from September 22 to October 28, 2006. Creations will be then returned to participants.
8: Participation in the contest "With your pens... create, stamp and post!" implies full and whole acceptance these rules.

This year, to be more faithful to the concept of postal art, the exhibition will present not only the decorated envelope as usual but also its contents, namely a small text relating to the subject: Christmas This text can be:  a proverb - a poem - a penmanship - a letter... In this category, there is, of course, the famous letter with Father Christmas. Even if you have not not written to him for more for 10, 20, or 30 years, this is the moment when when you can join again the dialogue again.
You can also write a letter of complaint to Father Christmas. For example, you never received the astronaut action figures wished for in 1969 (one is astonished, but space conquest marks time): claim!
Do not neglect Mother Christmas in these times of parity... whose letter-box contents are wrongfully empty at the end of the year.
Foot-note: the text of your letters should not exceed the back of a page to be able to be exhibited in its entirety with its envelope.
Works will be exhibited from November 20, 2006 to January 7, 2007 at the Hotel Routes.
The public and attending participants will join together on Monday December 4... the prizes (collectable stamps, books of philately...) will be decreed for the most beautiful envelope, funniest, most strange... The envelopes of the three selected artists will be exhibited thereafter in the buildings of the Post office, at the CNIT of Defense.
Participation is free.
*On an envelope* according to the technique of your choice, express yourselves freely on what "Christmas inspires to you"...
Format is left free, but you can also use and send several envelopes which will be displayed together to create a larger image.
PLEASE USE POSTAL STAMPS ON YOUR ENVELOPE IN ADDITION TO YOUR ARTWORK
Individual documentation including the name of the artist, the title given to your envelope and its estimate of value to set a price for possible sales, will be slipped inside each envelope.
You may send several artworks, however care should be taken not to exceed the area of 50 X 60 reserved for each participant.
Also take care not to create artwork that is too thick, so they can be exhibited in the passe-partout mountings of the gallery at silver plated rod. NB.
The experiments of the last few years have shown that joinings arrive rather in good condition, but if you have fears about the brittleness of your work, know that certain post offices agree to plug postal seals all while giving again you immediately your envelope. You then can, either slip it into another envelope and to send it thus protected, or deposit it in Itinéraires, under fold, with my name.

Fiapad:Itinéraires reserves the right not to present the envelopes that do not follow the theme.
Preselection may be made if the number of received envelopes exceeded the capacity of the gallery; but in all the cases these rejected envelopes would be returned over to sender.
Once your sending arrives and is accepted for participation, you will receive invitation cards to invite your friends at the time of show opening.

Recollection From 1987 to 2007
A mail art call for artistamps to exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest in April 2007, from the archivists at the Artistamp Museum of Artpool.  Júlia and György Galántai present "Recollection".. the retrieval of memory.  It is not a passive process; people employ metacognitive strategies to make the best use of their memory, and priming and other context can have a large effect on what is retrieved.

AIDS - CREATIVE SOLIDARITY
With the children, men and women suffering from chronic diseases, we need to be able to speak about the topic of HIV and AIDS, a little more than just on December 1.  The Ressy issues this mailart call to form a project that will allow all people wanting to act for prevention.
We propose that each artist sends artwork on an envelope...  text, an image, an artistic creation on the topic HIV-AIDS!
Free techniques and formats
Documentation of all the sendings on the site of the RESSY, as from December 2005.
Mailart responses to all participants, within realizable times...!
We plan several mini road shows to exhibit the artwork, in order to sensitize the public visiting waiting rooms of city doctors, wards, care centers, Anonymous locations and different Centers of Free Tracking partners of the RESSY.
Five sendings of mall art will be reproduced in postcards in quadrichrome and will be distributed and/or sold to communicate on the topic of solidarity towards the patients, with prior agreement of the mall artists who will be quoted as authors.
The marketing year 2005, proposed by UNO - AIDS encourages all to think of the responsibilities for each of us "... each one among us can contribute to stop the spread of HIV and to reduce the impact of the AIDS. You do not need to be a high level scientist working on a remedy to make a real difference. You can protect yourself and protect others from the infection of HIV, to accomodate in your life those who live with HIV or to speaking out about HIV and AIDS can help."

Aesthetic Mail  
As a mail artist you contribute to an international movement of aesthetics.
Mail art is hard to define, and is not sacred to any one country. One of the greatest parts of this spectacle is the intercultural, postmodernism you experience from receiving and sending. This mail call is an attempt to capture the momentum of the form.
The mail call is titled, “Aesthetic Mail” and will hopefully be two fold.

"LAUGHING & SMILING FOR PEACE"  
I got the idea at the festival when Pete Spence labeled him and me as the "last 2 laughing agnostics". Laughter is a serious weapon of resistance in the hand of the poor verses the powerful. I invented the stamp "smiling is the rebellion of the poor", so it's a topic that is already a long time in my head. The emperor is naked when you make fun of him. Everybody knows that. Why do you think that the Dalai Lama is always smiling and not the Chinese leaders in their red free market paradises build on the corpses of dead miners?
Free size and medium as usual.
You can send me fun stuff, laughing or smiling self portraits and portraits, red nose communications (thank you Zois & Lynn), group portraits of smiling buffoons for peace, clowns united for peace performances, tape me your laughter and mail it to me so I can make a compilation and so on... The danger of laughter was the essence of Eco's In the name of the rose. I'm sure that you'll find many connections yourself if you reflect on the issue.

Frantic lives just meters away from the Atlantic and stares day in, day out at the horizon of the ocean..  Antic-ham, when walking along her river in Seoul can feel the wind coming from the west, and hear the message of the fish. Soon both will become fish and unite in the waters.  Already in early religions, the fish was a symbol of desire, union and fecundity, as well as a symbol of the power of the female sexuality, through a multitude of goddesses with fish symbols, or mermaids, nymphs and water spirits.
